Georgia women's swim and dive team ranks 14th after first day of NCAA Division I women's swim and dive championships

On the first day of competition at the NCAA Division I women’s swimming & diving championships, the Georgia women’s 800y freestyle relay earned second-team All-America honors and finished 11th overall with a season best time of 6:56.04.
Senior Duné Coetzee opened the event for Georgia with a 1:44.16 split. Next off the block was junior Shea Furse with the fastest split of 1:43.69. Freshman Marie Landreneau swam a 1:43.91. Junior Ieva Maluka anchored the race with a time of 1:43.98.
Stanford took home gold in the event with a time of 6:46.98, followed by Virginia in second and Florida in third.
The Georgia women's team is currently in 14th place overall with 12 points and is looking to improve upon its 13th place finish last season.
Stanford and Virginia are currently tied for first place overall with 74 points, followed by Florida in third with 60 points.
The NCAA championships ramp up competition on Thursday with the 500 yard freestyle, 200 yard individual medley, 50 yard freestyle, 1 meter dive, and 200 yard freestyle relay.
Seniors Rachel Stege, Coetzee, and Abby McCulloh are all seeded in the top 16 in the 500 yard freestyle. All earned First Team All-America honors last season.
The Prelims for the Thursday events are at 1 p.m EDT followed by finals at 9 p.m at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
