On Wednesday, Georgia senior Abby McCulloh, an NCAA champion, seven-time All-American and Lilburn, Georgia native, was awarded the SEC H. Boyd McWhorter Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the year.

McCulloh along with the male recipient, Mason Nichols – an Ole Miss baseball player – were selected by a panel of Faculty Athletics Representatives from all 16 SEC schools.

“This honor would not be possible without everyone at the University of Georgia,” McCulloh said. “The resources provided here have allowed me to thrive both athletically and academically, and I am so grateful for the support system they have given here.

Both McCulloh and Nichols are to be awarded a $20,000 scholarship to pursue their post graduate studies.

McCulloh is graduating in May from the University of Georgia with a 4.0 in Journalism. She plans to continue her education at Georgia to pursue a masters in sports management.

“I’ve been so inspired by the women in our athletic department, particularly Darice Griffin, our deputy AD," McCulloh said. "I think if I could be anything like her that would be incredible. Having women support female athletes is always awesome."

She now joins eight other Georgia women’s swimmers in earning the H. Boyd McWhorter Award, the most recipients of any SEC athletic program.

“The H. Boyd McWhorter Award is the highest honor earned by a student-athlete in the SEC, and there is no one more deserving than Abby McCulloh,” Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks said. “As a national champion swimmer, a member of the UGA Athletic Association Board of Directors, and a leader in many of our Georgia Way programs, Abby has been an outstanding representative of Georgia Athletics and has worked tirelessly to excel in all facets of the student-athlete experience.”
